 Hillside students aiming for MIT – Students at the New Tech school have been working on creating affordable, environmentally friendly roof gardens and are trying to raise money to show their work at the M.I.T. Eurekafest.  ”I talk about this more than I talk about school,” said Zenik Hite, a junior. “It’s just what we did — what we did to the roof today, what new ideas we came up with.” Added Hite: “It’s pretty much the most exciting part of my day.” (Herald-Sun)

 J.Cole headlines first NY show – NC native and Jay-Z protegee sold-out his first NY show as a headliner.  “Jay told me, ‘It’s your first sold-out show in New York, so take a second after the first song,’ ” Cole told the crowd after breezing through a medley of “Dollar and a Dream II” and “World Is Empty.” “And step back and share it with y’all. So that’s what I’m doing.” (MTV)

 Duke newspaper analyzes admission process – First in a three part series investigates the admissions process to Duke University, where only 14% of applicants are accepted.  But reading applications is not an entirely qualitative process. Both readers assigned to an application rate an applicant on a five-point scale in each of six categories: curriculum, achievement, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities and personal qualities, essay and standardized testing. “The typical Duke matriculant is a smart, very smart, talented, engaged person,” Guttentag said. “Not fives across the board.” (Chronicle)

 Profile of hooper Emanuel Chapman - Enloe High School point guard Emmanuel Chapman will play next year at NCCU for Coach LeVelle Moton, who idolized Champman’s father growing up.  “He was my idol when I was growing up,” Moton said. “I had never seen anyone handle the ball and pass the way he did.” (N&O)

Students critical of suspension rates – Northwood High School student article weighs the pros and cons of the increased suspension rate as of late at the high school.  “I got ISS for being late three days,” said student Sara Billman. “I think that’s kind of ridiculous because it puts us farther behind than we would be normally, and suspending someone from school is kind of counterproductive.” OR “Truthfully the rules themselves haven’t really changed,” said teacher Pat Thornhill. “I think the difference is that the rules are being enforced more consistently than they have been in the past, and some students may perceive that as being stricter, when in fact it’s just more consistent in following the policies we’ve always had.” (Omniscent)

Profile of DSA ultimate frisbee team - Student profile of the sport, the history of the support and the success of the Durham School of the Arts ultimate frisbee team. Senior Nathan Sanders agrees. “I mean it’s competitive, but it’s not like a hardcore competitive league, so it’s more fun.” (The Gallery)

Enloe students wary of changes – Enloe High Schools students have been among the most vocal in protesting the recent Wake County School Board decision to end the diversity policy. “In the neighborhood over here it’s going to be predominantly black students, so I don’t feel it’s fair because when you go to school it’s about meeting new people,” said Enloe student Janikqua Outlaw. 7 books that changed my life - Written by a Duke student: “Blood Meridian” by Cormac McCarthy: This one is so cold it will leave you shivering. The absolute brutality and gore of McCarthy’s Western novel is too much for most readers, but continue on and you’ll witness the experiences of an unnamed character after he joins a gang on the search for Native American scalps. CHHS art show focuses on Haiti – Students created art using the events of Haiti as inspiration and are selling the works at a local coffee shop with proceeds going to American Red Cross.  “Kids feel like they want to help and contribute something, but that they don’t have a lot that they can offer,” Watson said. “This gave them an opportunity to give something of themselves.” (Carrboro Commons)

Should schools require minimum GPA for athletes - Daily Tar Heel column argues that all high schools should follow Chapel Hill’s consideration of requiring athletes to maintain a 2.0 GPA instead of the current policy which requires students to pass 5 classes the previous semester.  Sure, some of these students are aspiring to play professional sports after high school. But most of them will not make it, and the school board owes it to every student to ensure they are prepared to join the work force or enrol in post-secondary education. (Daily Tar Heel)

6 local students selected as Park Scholars - 6 Triangle winners were among the 53 Park Scholars who receive a full-ride at NC State and other stipends, valued at $80,000.  Nicole Doris Roscoe from Chatham Central High School and plans to major in biology. Ansilta Zulima De Luca-Westrate from Durham Academy and plans to major in elementary education. Madhulika Vulimiri of Morrisville from Enloe High School and plans to major in biology or public health. Alex Jin-Wei Chin from Broughton High School and plans to major in mathematics and physics. William Hampton Coe from Sanderson High School and plans to major in philosophy. Stephen Thomas West from Trinity Academy and plans to major in aerospace engineering. “Alternative Spring Break” – More and more college students are foregoing the beaches of Florida and instead opting to volunteer for public service projects around the nation and world.  ”Some students come back saying they’ll change their major or career path,”Samantha Giacobozzi says. “Some come back and think differently about the world a little bit.
